How fortunate are to have the actual founder of the Invasion still leading it – in her usual flair and wit

 For the uninformed or newbies a wonderful fable that is actually true: That such a simple situation blossomed into the extravaganza it is – well, you just can’t make this stuff up!
On July 4th weekend, l976, a handful of bored drag queens decided to water taxi to the Pines and have a drink at John Whyte’s conservative restaurant (the recently deceased Mr. Whyte will forever be immortalized in this tale) They included Teri Warren, Panzi (who’d just been elected the Grove’s first Homecoming Queen), Rose Levine, Lyn Hutton and the late Amelia Migliaccio, and were refused service.
The next year they returned with a few more and by now were received as the tradition was born. Today there are approximately 350 herded aboard by Panzi’s bull horn through the crowds assembled downtown at the Grove to be greeted by about 3000 in the Pines yacht festooned harbor.
We’ve come a along way, Baby!!!
